Watching with friends, I just realized that my review of this didn’t get posted in the mag. So since I have the original file. Imma post it here now so here is my submitted review of This Is The End.
THIS IS THE END
In theaters June 7
3 out of 5
Jay goes to visit his bud Seth in LA to hang out. After video gaming and smoking shameless amounts of weed, Seth tells Jay he has been invited to a party at James Franco’s house and suggests that he and Jay attend. Jay who is not really comfortable with Seth’s other friends reluctantly agrees to go. It’s a huge party and a lot of Seth’s friends and a few other celebrities are there including Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Michael Cera, Mindy Kaling, Kevin Hart, Aziz Ansari, and also Rihana. The scene is a mad house, especially with Michael Cera doing more coke than Scarface. Jay is not really feeling comfortable or fitting in well, so he decided to take off to buy a pack of smokes. Seth goes with him. After a few minutes at the convenience store there is a thunderous crash and all the windows are shattered. As Seth and Jay watch, people are being pulled up to the sky in blue tractor beams of light. Terrified they flee back to James’ pad where everyone is oblivious to what’s going on until the ground begins shaking. Panic ensues as the party goers flee the house. Sinkholes open in the ground as it cracks, fire begins raining from the sky and breaking out everywhere. Not exactly sure what’s going on, James, Seth, Jay, Jonah, and Craig, band together and barricade themselves in James’ house to ride out what they come to figure out is the apocalypse. Who will survive and who will be demon food?
To say This Is The End is self indulgent is a huge understatement. It’s self indulgence at it’s finest. That’s to be expected I guess when everyone is playing “themselves” poking fun at their perceived real life personas: Michael Sera totally sex crazed and coked out; Rihana bitch slapping a party goer for grabbing her; James Franco as the zen host and eccentric artist. I’m not really sure how to classify this movie. Buddy Comedy, Horror Comedy, or just Apocalyptic disaster comedy. There are horror movie type shock very bloody special effects, giant demons, and there are some laughs. To combat boredom or pass the time the group stage a “filming” of a sequel to Pineapple Express. Danny McBride is priceless as he has really no regard for anyone but himself and practically eats all the food and drinks all the water that the others have gathered. which ultimately leads to them kicking him out of the house. In shades of Rosemary’s Baby, Jonah gets raped by a demon. Emma Watson who was at first a welcomed guest decides that their company may not be the best place for her and hijacks their remaining alcohol at axe point. Oh and there’s an almost 5 minute shouting match between Franco and McBride about masturbation etiquette. The absolute funniest joke in this movie for me, which involved a leashed and ball gagged Channing Tatum came at practically the end. There is also a cool appearance by The Backstreet Boys. Yes, I said The Backstreet Boys.
Directed by first timers Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg, This Is The End is mildly entertaining, but it may be funnier if you were stoned. In fact since we’re dealing with this particular cast (who smokes through out) I’m sure of it. That would be the best way to see it, otherwise I recommend waiting until it hits the dollar show or rental. $9.00 I think is a bit much to pay.
